The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has released a critical update that may impact countless UK motorists. The DVLA, the entity accountable for managing driving licences and overseeing drivers throughout the nation, delivered a notice from its official DVLA channel on X, previously known as Twitter.

The communication targeted around two million individuals who journey overseas with their vehicles annually. There's a crucial step many might not be aware of before setting off, and the DVLA has highlighted this point.

Their message stated: "If you're planning to drive abroad, you might need an international driving permit (IDP). IDPs are now exclusively available from participating PayPoint stores across the UK."

Further details were made accessible through a link attached to the update.

The elaboration noted: "This internationally recognised document is required when driving overseas. IDPs support a British or Northern Irish licence in countries where photographic proof of ID is needed, or where your licence alone may not be enough. There are 3 types of IDPs, and the right one for you depends on the country or countries you wish to drive in.", reports the Express.

Motorists seeking an IDP must factor in an application charge of £5.50. Additionally, applicants must possess a valid full GB or Northern Ireland driving licence—whether it’s a current photocard or an older paper version—alongside a recent passport photograph.

Holders of the older paper driving licence will need to present a valid passport as well. The guidance further clarifies: "If you hold a driving licence from the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a foreign country or drive under a diplomatic licence, you are unfortunately not eligible to apply."

An International Driving Permit (IDP) can be obtained in person at select shops featuring PayPoint services.

Travellers may require a separate IDP for each country they plan to visit and should familiarise themselves with the specific driving regulations of their destinations. This includes understanding local speed limits, drink-driving laws, and potentially needing additional items such as emission stickers, headlight converter stickers, and/or a UK sticker.
