Ryanair updates cabin bag fees to £60 for luggage but passengers avoid it

Ryanair has updated its baggage policy, giving passengers the option to bring a larger cabin bag on board for a fee - but it could cost you more than the actual flight

Ryanair has updated its pricing for passengers looking to bring a larger cabin bag aboard, with immediate changes in their policy. At present, those wishing to travel with a 10kg suitcase must pay extra for Priority boarding.

Alternatively, travellers can carry on just a small personal bag that measures no more than 40x20x25cm without any additional cost, as this is already included within the ticket price. The charge for upgrading to Priority, which comprises both a small personal bag and a 10kg suitcase up to the dimensions of 55x40x20cm, swings from £6 to £36 if selected during the original flight booking process.

For those who opt to enhance their ticket to include Priority at a later stage or directly at the airport, Ryanair now applies higher charges. Whereas previously, according to Ryanair's website, fees ranged from £20 to £38, these have now been revised to between £20 and £60.

Though passengers have been avoiding fees with bags like Antler's Chelsea Backpack, their Overnight bag and their Discovery backpack (all £140). Or the Lossga backpack on Amazon that's £18.04 and is a midpoint between a suitcase and a rucksack. In response to enquiries about the scale-up in prices, a Ryanair representative underscored a particular portion of its luggage guidelines: "Fee varies depending on the route and travel dates selected."

Additionally, the airline spokesperson clarified: "Non-priority customers who have not added a bag to their booking can still purchase a 10kg Check-in bag at the airport bag drop desk for €/£ 35.99. Non-priority customers who bring their 10kg Check-in bag to the boarding gate may check it in against payment of a fee of €/£ 46.00 - €/£ 60.00.", reports Birmingham Live.

The spokesperson further expounded on the baggage fees, saying: "This is to align with the gate bag fee if passengers choose to bring their 10kg to the boarding gate and want to carry it on board, then they are subject to a gate fee."

Travellers have taken to social media to vent their frustration over Ryanair's extra fees for services such as airport check-in, printing boarding passes at the airport, or selecting seats alongside family and friends.

Several disgruntled customers have branded the additional charges a 'rip off'. @ColinScunner aired grievances on Twitter : "So @Ryanair have put the price of Priority boarding up from £26 to £40 ... rip off ... everything extra, so you book your flight then it's add on after add on after add on. Before you know it you're another £100 out of pocket."

Another user, @Sickboy_Mcsatan, compared low-cost rivals: "Just avoid Ryanair if you can, they make EasyJet seem luxurious and customer friendly. They charge extra for *every* little thing, I'll never use them again if there's an alternative."

Further commenting on the budget airlines pricing, Andy Holmes noted: "Cheap flights can still be found but not many. Adding priority really brings up the price. Can use a tiny bag for a two-day trip but usually need a trolley bag and therefore priority is required and sometimes it costs more than the ticket."

For savvy travellers seeking to navigate these extra fees, the Brixham Cabin Bag from luxury luggage brand Antler is perfectly sized for a Ryanair Priority 10kg allowance and is currently available with a £51 discount in the sale. Moreover, Amazon is offering a deal on its KLOSTAIN Cabin Bag, which fits comfortably under airplane seats and serves as an ideal personal bag on Ryanair flights - now reduced to just £22.09 for a short period.
