The e Vitara, Suzuki Motor Corporation's first battery electric vehicle (BEV) model, has been revealed in Milan, Italy. The electric SUV will be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki India's Gujarat plant, with production scheduled to commence in the spring of 2025. Sales are expected to start around the summer of 2025 across the globe, including Europe, India, and Japan.
Although the e Vitara will power Maruti's EV dream in India, almost 50% of the total units produced will be exported to Europe and Japan. It will be showcased in India at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025.
The e Vitara is based on the eVX concept model, which made its global debut at Auto Expo held in India in January 2023 and was later showcased at Japan Mobility Show in October 2023.
The USPs of the e Vitara include a BEV powertrain composed of eAxle (integrating motor and inverter) and lithium-iron-phosphate battery, ALLGRIP-e electric 4WD system with an independent eAxle each at the front and rear, and an EV-specific Heartect-e platform.
The European-spec e Vitara has two battery options -- 49kWh and 61kWh -- and as many drive system choices -- 2WD and 4WD. While the 49kWh version will be available with a 2WD system only, the 61kWh version will have both 2WD and 4WD systems.
For the e Vitara 49kWh/2WD, there is a 106kW/189Nm motor. The e Vitara 61kWh/2WD has a 128kW/189Nm motor. The top-spec e Vitara 61kWh/4WD has a motor with a combined power output of 135kW (128kW front and 48kW rear) and a maximum torque of 300Nm. We expect the range for the top-of-the-line variant to be more than 500km.
The electric SUV measures 4,275mm in length, 1,800mm in width, 1,635mm in height and has a 2,700mm long wheelbase. The ground clearance is 180mm.
In India, Maruti will provide the e Vitara to Toyota as part of the global Suzuki-Toyota alliance.
The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara will take on the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3 and the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV. We expect the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara price in India to start from Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom).
