Bargain Hunt couple make history with Golden Gavel win after surprise profit

by · DevonLive

A couple on Bargain Hunt achieved the rare feat of securing the coveted Golden Gavel after making a very low profit.

Kaz and Richard, who appeared on today's episode, made three purchases with the aim of turning a profit. Their first buy was an antique lantern from 1900-1910, which they bought for £109 despite the auctioneer's estimate of £60 - £100.

Their second purchase had to fit in their pocket, leading them to choose a tiger eye ring from the 70s, costing them £22. However, the auctioneer had valued it below the £20 mark.

The final item was a stop sign, described by the auctioneer as "something you'd find in a student house on a Friday night after eight pints of beer", with an estimated value of £30 - £40.

At the auction, the lantern initially struggled but eventually sold for £110, keeping their hopes of a Golden Gavel alive. The ring, bought for £22, fetched them £30, bringing their total profit to £9, reports the Express.

In a surprising turn of events, they managed to sell the stop sign for £35, ensuring a profit on all three items.

"Be still my beating heart! You made 10 quid! I don't think I've ever known anyone make £10 and get a Golden Gavel," exclaimed host Charlie Ross, as the pair celebrated their unprecedented success.

The blue team managed to bag a profit of £12 on their first piece at the auction. Unfortunately, their luck went the other way when they sold a solid oak table with a loss of £5. The third item was even less fortunate, incurring a significant loss of £225.

Despite the promising initial bid of £65 for one of their items, the blues eventually experienced a shortfall of £35. Yet, their fortunes turned slightly with the expert's special selection, which netted them a £25 profit on a sale price of £30, reducing their overall losses.

Meanwhile, the red couple also took a punt on the bonus buy but it didn't pay off, resulting in higher losses. Nonetheless, the red pair still celebrated their wins with the coveted Golden Gavels due to their previous profitable bargains.
