Here's a round up of all the potential measures that could help parents.

Double Child Benefit

Two double child benefit payments before Christmas look set to be announced in the Budget following Government talks. With the usual rate of Child Benefit being €140, a two double payments would add up to a whopping €560 per child.

€250 electricity credit

The government have signed off on an electricity credit worth €250 per household, which could be split into two payments of €125. They look likely to be paid before the end of the year.

Free schoolbooks for Leaving Cert students

Leaving Cert students are in line for free schoolbooks as the government look like they will extend the scheme, which was expanded to Junior Cycle in the last budget. With Leaving Cert books and supplies estimated to cost around €500, this will be a huge boost for parents.

Social welfare increase

The weekly rate of core social welfare payments are reportedly due to rise by around €12 a week. This would result in a cash boost of €624 per year.

Cost of living bonuses

The Government is preparing to make two social welfare bonus payments before the end of the year as part of a more targeted cost-of-living measure.

The traditional Christmas bonus on all major social welfare payments, including the State pension and jobseekers' benefit, will be given in December as normal. But there are now also plans for a second set of bonus payments to be paid in the immediate aftermath of the budget in October.

Other lump sum payments announced last year included a €300 fuel allowance payment; a €400 disability grant, and a €400 lump-sum Working Family Payment and it will be interesting to see if these make a return this year.

Other measures

The Rent Tax Credit looks likely to rise to €1,000 and between tax changes and cost-of-living measures, Minister for Finance Jack Chambers has said workers will benefit by approximately €1,000 in this budget.
