Experts warn against mowing the lawn in wet conditions as UK braces for a rainy October

The wet weather can be frustrating for gardeners, who may have to postpone their plans - but one company has warned grass cutters to be careful when mowing in the rain

As September arrived, it was clear that autumn had fully taken hold across the UK - with many areas experiencing heavy rainfall and even flooding.

This has disrupted or halted the plans of some gardeners, as wet weather isn't exactly enticing for outdoor activities.

It can be particularly frustrating if this means your lawn has become somewhat unruly. While there's ongoing debate about whether or not to mow the lawn in damp conditions, experts have cautioned that doing so could actually pose a risk.

Lawn specialists Moowy have urged individuals to exercise "extra" caution if they decide to mow their lawns while they're wet. In a post on their website titled "why mowing wet grass can be dangerous", they warned that it could not only harm the lawn but also lead to injuries.

Their warning comes as Brits brace themselves for a dreary October. The Met Office's forecast for the first half of the month anticipates "unsettled conditions, with periods of rain or showers, perhaps heavy and persistent at times, and perhaps accompanied by windy spells too. The wettest conditions, relative to average, are likely across England and Wales."

"Firstly, your mower's wheels can leave marks and potholes in wet grass, leading to irregular growth and damage to the turf," Moowy elaborated, reports Wales Online.

"However, the main reason mowing wet grass is hazardous is that it increases the chances of slipping or falling, especially when mowing on slopes."

The experts have warned garden enthusiasts saying: "And don't forget: you're in control of a fairly powerful machine. If you have to mow wet grass, be extra careful, and apply appropriate safety measures to avoid injury."

They also cautioned: "And be extra cautious when handling an electric mower because water and electricity are a dangerous combination."

They elaborated on the downsides of tackling your lawn during damp conditions, telling homeowners that: "There are several reasons why cutting wet grass is a bad idea."

Moowy explained further: "Principally, your lawn mower isn't designed to work effectively on wet surfaces. Wet grass flattens quickly, which makes the task of cutting particularly tricky for your mower. Dry grass stands upright more readily, ensuring you get a nice, clean cut."

Nonetheless, if mowing in wet conditions can't be avoided, Moowy advised taking certain safety steps, noting: "Never mow while it's raining, and avoid sharp turns. And try to walk on the wet grass as little as possible to prevent soil compaction."
