Iceland's Greggs range - every product rated from worst to best

by · ChronicleLive

You can find a Greggs almost anywhere, but there are times when you fancy a sausage roll and the Greggs ovens are switched off. This is why they introduced their Iceland range, so you can enjoy the bakery experience at home.

But is it possible? Can you achieve that crispy, golden flaky pastry in your own oven?

I decided to put this to the test with the help of my eager family, sampling all nine items from the Greggs Iceland range and ranking them from our least favourite to the best - with an unexpected contender securing second place.

And if you're curious, yes, you can replicate the authentic Greggs experience at home, although you might need to bake it for longer than the packet instructions suggest. I meticulously timed everything, but felt some items needed a bit more time and turned them over to achieve that crispy golden finish - though this could just be down to my oven, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Additionally, there aren't any air fryer cooking instructions, but we did try a sausage roll in our air fryer and it came out perfectly. Here's how the products ranked, from least favourite to the best.

9. Greggs 2 Chicken Bakes 306g - £3 (4 for £10) - 4/10.

In ninth place was the traditional chicken bake, which was a surprise as I recall enjoying this in my younger years, however, I also remember it being more flavoursome. I recall it having a peppery kick, but this version seemed somewhat bland.

The pastry is delightful and crisp, however, the chunks of chicken are somewhat bland and the sauce has a rather gloopy texture which I didn't particularly enjoy. But, for many, this is their default Greggs order, so perhaps it's just me.

8. Greggs 2 Cheese and Onion Bakes 288g - £3 (4 for £10) - 5/10.

Once again, we have superb pastry, something Greggs has truly mastered. However, this was slightly bland and lacked a strong cheesy flavour.

It was predominantly onion and white sauce. But I understand this is the vegetarian option in the pasties and I believe with a dollop of ketchup (or salad cream - trust me) this could be easily improved.

7. Greggs 2 Bacon and Cheese Wraps 194g - £3 (4 for £10) - 5.5/10.

I've never tried these before and they seem like an excellent breakfast treat. The pastry is as good as ever, but I think this might be a bit too salty.

My other concern was that the bacon doesn't get crispy, which isn't always appealing, however maybe there's a way to cook it so it does, perhaps the air fryer can help next time?

And like the cheese and onion bake, a bit of red sauce would go wonderfully with this.

6. Greggs Limited Edition 2 Katsu Chicken Bakes 320g - £3 (4 for £10) - 6.5/10.

The katsu bakes have recently been added to the Iceland range and they smell fantastic, a noticeable contrast to the other more traditional fillings. Inside the bake, there are more chicken pieces than the chicken bake and the curry has a lovely warmth to it with some really nice fruity undertones.

This pasty has a fantastic flavour, but it does seem drier than usual. Despite the delicious textured, spiced crumb coating, it may contribute to the bake's dryness.

However, if you're after a spicy kick, this is ideal.

5. Greggs 2 Steak Bakes 280g - £3 (available 4 for £10) - 7/10.

This would usually be my first choice at Greggs, so I'm surprised to find it in the middle of the pack. Don't get me wrong, the peppery, rich, silky gravy is still excellent, but when tasting them all, I found the steak pieces slightly chewy and the filling overly moist.

However, if you're eating at home, you can use a knife and fork, so the filling shouldn't pose a problem. It's still a classic, but there are better options, in my opinion.

4. Greggs 2 Corned Beef Bakes 290g - £3 (4 for £10) - 8/10.

My local Greggs doesn't offer corned beef bakes as they're primarily sold in Wales. I believe it's time they were available nationwide.

This bake was incredibly comforting. The classic pastry and added onion evoke memories of childhood corned beef hash, and it would pair wonderfully with a side of baked beans.

It's definitely time for these to be available in Greggs stores across the UK. If your local branch doesn't stock them, remember you can always head to Iceland.

3. Greggs Vegan Sausage Rolls 4 Pack 420g - £3 (4 for £10) - 8.5/10.

This is a fantastic product, one I've previously enjoyed by choice, despite being a meat-eater. It's just as good at home.

The delightful herby flavour and aroma make it scrumptious, and while the pastry isn't as golden or moist as the traditional Greggs pasty, it's delightfully crisp and flaky.

Even my extremely picky four-year-old, who often struggles with food smells and textures (if you know, you know), was won over by this.

2. Greggs 2 Sausage and Bean Melts 308g - £2.00 was £3 - 9.5/10.

A surprise entry for me at number two, but the sausage and bean melt was superb. I never usually opt for this, but I'll definitely be purchasing it again.

The beans have been beautifully stewed - which, in my opinion, is the only way to serve beans - providing the filling with a rich texture.

The sweetness from the sauce complements the sausage pieces perfectly, which are generously distributed throughout. Combine this with the incredible Greggs pastry and it's hard to top, but it was outdone by the one and only....

1. Greggs 4 Sausage Rolls 427g - £3 (available 4 for £10) - 10000000/10.

Well, what can I say?

Nothing beats a Greggs sausage roll. I was concerned it wouldn't bake as well as when you buy it fresh from the shop, but I needn't have worried.

This is bakery perfection. And you get four for £3, who knew heaven could be so affordable?
