More households than ever rely on charity for Thanksgiving meals

The surging demand results from rising food costs that have forced Canadians to make tough decisions

Embattled by soaring living costs, Calgarians are increasingly turning to non-profits for food ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend.

The number of households relying on the food bank every day has surpassed 750, more than double that of two years ago, said Melissa From, president and CEO of Calgary Food Bank.

“It’s overwhelming sometimes,” From said.

She added that the organization has seen an influx of working-class people who view the food bank as a last resort.
