Neera Tanden, a senior adviser to President Joe Biden, was named White House staff secretary Friday, nearly eight months after the White House pulled her nomination to serve as director of the Office of Management and Budget.

"The Staff Secretary role is the central nervous system of the White House and moves the decision-making process and manages a wide variety of issues for the President," a White House official told POLITICO in a statement. "Neera has over two decades of experience in policy and management which are critical elements of the role. Her experience across domestic, economic and national security policy will be a key asset in this new role."

Tanden's new role was first reported by The Washington Post. In addition to her duties as staff secretary, Tanden will keep her senior adviser title "and will continue to provide leadership on particular projects and initiatives," the White House official said. She will report to White House chief of staff Ron Klain.
