Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has promised to launch a probe to ascertain an ISI link of former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s Pakistani female friend, Aroosa Alam.

“They’re (Capt Amarinder Singh) now saying that there’s threat from ISI. We’ll look into the woman’s connection with it (ISI). Capt kept raising drones issue coming from Pakistan for last 4.5 yrs,” Randhawa was quoted by ANI as saying.

The Punjab deputy chief minister added, “So Captain first raised this issue and later got BSF deployed in Punjab. We will ask DGP to look into this matter.”

Randhawa’s statement assumes significance given that Singh has been raising the issue of security threats posed by Pakistan in Punjab. He had even gone to the extent of terming his former cabinet colleague, Navjot Singh Sidhu, as a security threat to India accusing him of having connections with the Pakistani establishment.

He had said, “The government of Punjab means the security of India, and if Sidhu is made the face of the Congress for chief ministership, I will fight him at every step.”

Singh had to resign as the chief minister of Punjab amidst a bitter feud with Sidhu, who was appointed as the head of Punjab Congress ahead of the next year’s assembly polls.

Singh later announced that he would float a new party and strike an alliance with the BJP for the assembly polls.

Aroosa Alam is a Pakistani journalist, who has frequently visited Singh in Punjab in the past. She had even attended Amarinder Singh’s oath-taking ceremony in 2017.

This is the sharpest attack by the Congress on Amarinder Singh, who will have tough time explaining to Punjab’s electorates over his hypocrisy on the subject of national security given his own decision to befriend a Pakistani woman, who is alleged to be close to the ISI.
