New Delhi: In his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met the kin of victims of terror killings and promised stern action against those who disrupt peace. He also reiterated that elections would be held after the delimitation exercise which will be followed by restoration of statehood.

Reaching out to the youths in the Valley, Shah urged them to stand up to disruptive elements and become ambassadors of peace.

He also told them to contribute to the development of the Union Territory saying it is their responsibility.

Defending the union government’s decision to repeal Article 370, Shah said it reduced terrorism and stone pelting has become invisible.

Abrogation of Article 370 brought an end to terrorism, nepotism and corruption, he added.

“I want to assure you that strict action will be taken against those who want to ruin the peace of J&K, no one can obstruct development here. It’s our commitment,” he added.

He was welcomed by J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha at Srinagar airport and other top officials of the local administration. Shah has been accompanied by Home Secretary AK Bhalla, other senior officials of the Home Ministry, heads of most of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and the intelligence agencies including the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

Amit Shah visited the house of the martyr of J&K Police, Inspector Parvez who was killed by terrorists and met his wife Fatima Akhtar. He has given a government job to Parvez’s wife.

After meeting Parvez's kin, the Union Home Minister chaired a high-level security review meeting in Srinagar. It was the first major security review after the targeted civilian killings by terrorists in the Valley.

Jitendra Singh and the Lt Governor were also present during the meeting.

During this visit, Shah also addressed a mega public rally and flagged off the first Srinagar-Sharjah direct flight.

“We declare it open from today. This will help in boosting tourism and bring more investment in the Union Territory,” he said.

The Home Minister also said corruption has decreased in Jammu and Kashmir and people are now getting direct benefits from government schemes.
