Prop Gun Fired By Alec Baldwin Kills Cinematographer On The Set Of His New Film

Alec Baldwin has reportedly accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins with a prop gun on the set of upcoming film, Rust.

According to Variety and the New York Times, Baldwin fired the prop gun, accidentally killing Hutchins and wounding the film’s director Joel Souza. The incident was reported at 1.50pm local time on Thursday in New Mexico.

“The Santa Fe County sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot during filming of a scene on the set of the movie western Rust,” said a statement from local law enforcement.

“According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged. Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”

The incident is being described as a horrible accident, and there is no assertion that Baldwin was attempting to harm either party in any way.

Hutchins, 42, was quickly helicoptered to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Her death was later confirmed by the International Cinematographers Guild in a statement.

“We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called Rust in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,” guild president John Lindley and Rebecca Rhine, the executive director of Rust, said in a joint statement.

“The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild’s family.”

Souza, 48, was transported by ambulance to the Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, where he is being treated for his injuries and receiving emergency care.

Alec Baldwin works as a co-producer on the film and plays the titular character.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed that no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed against anyone involved.

The incident remains an “open and active” investigation at the time of publishing.
