Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe shouted anti-colonial slogans at King Charles during his visit to the Australian parliament on Monday, shocking assembled lawmakers and other dignitaries.

The incident occurred as King Charles and Queen Camilla are currently in Australia on a five-day visit. The King addressed Australian MPs and senators in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra today.

At a Parliament reception to welcome the British monarch, Lidia Thorpe shouted at Charles that he was not her king and should “give us our land back.”

The senator spoke to the BBC after she was removed from the parliament building, saying Charles is not sovereign because “he is not of this land”.
