The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside caste-based discriminatory provisions of prison manuals of around 11 states while deprecating the practice of distribution of work and segregation of prisoners in separate wards on basis of their castes.

A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud struck down provisions in state prison manuals enabling caste-based discrimination against inmates and ordered all states to amend the discriminatory rules within three months.

The Supreme Court has condemned caste-based discrimination in prisons, ordering immediate revisions to state prison manuals and mandating equal treatment and fair work distribution for all inmates.

In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court on Thursday banned caste-based discrimination like division of manual labour, segregation of barracks and bias against prisoners of de-notified tribes and habitual offenders.

The Court made it clear that prisoners from oppressed castes cannot be forced into degrading work simply because of their marginalised status.

The Supreme Court on Thursday said the fight against caste-based discrimination was not a battle that can be won overnight and it requires sustained effort, dedication, and the willingness to confront and challenge societal norms that perpetuate inequality.
