The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act related to the grant of Indian citizenship to illegal immigrants in Assam by a majority verdict of 4:1.

Pertinently, today’s landmark verdict on S6A of Citizenship Act will lhave a significant bearing on the Assam NRC list.

The Supreme Court declared that those who have entered Assam from Bangladesh on or after March 25, 1971 are all illegal immigrants, who must be identified and deported.
