India protests Canadian officials' baseless accusations against Home Minister Amit Shah, warning of serious consequences for bilateral ties.

Rubbishing a Canadian minister's claims that Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered the targeting of Sikh separatists in the country, India has termed them absurd and baseless and said a representative of the Canadian High Commission had been summoned.

'It was conveyed in the Note that the Government of India protests in the strongest terms to the absurd and baseless references made to the Union Home Minister of India before the Committee by Deputy Minister David Morrison,' the MEA in a statement said.

The MEA summoned the Canadian High Commission's representative in Delhi to deliver a firm diplomatic note addressing what it described as baseless accusations against Shah.

The government on Saturday said the Canadian officials "deliberately leaked unfounded insinuations to international media to discredit India and influence other nations".

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said such irresponsible actions will have serious consequences for bilateral ties.
