Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors charged Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, with the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate Tuesday in the U.S.District Court for Southern Florida.

Routh, 58, is being held in jail awaiting trial on two federal gun crime charges.

The gunman accused of planning to kill Donald Trump at his Florida golf course was indicted Tuesday on three additional counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, the US Department of Justice announced.

Ryan W. Routh already faced two federal gun charges related to his attempted assassination of Donald Trump, though officials said more could be coming.
