DWP issues Winter Fuel Payment deadline warning for pensioners to claim back £300

People need to act to avoid losing out on potentially £300 this Christmas

Pensioners are being encouraged to submit their Winter Fuel Payment claim by December 21 to avoid missing out on a potential £300. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that claims can be backdated to September 22, 2024, meaning eligible individuals could receive three months' worth of support to help with their bills during the colder months.

The payment amount is determined by the recipient's birth year. Those born between September 23 1944 and September 22 1958 will receive £200, while those born before 23rd September 1944 will receive £300.

According to DWP criteria, single people of qualifying age could receive the payment if they have a weekly income lower than £218.15, and couples could successfully claim if their income is less than £332.95. The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual tax-free payment made by the Government to assist those over a certain age with their heating costs.

Labour faced severe criticism after Chancellor Rachel Reeves scrapped the previously universal Winter Fuel Payment in July, meaning only pensioners receiving benefits could claim for the support, reports the Express.
