In a historic decision, the BJP-led Maharashtra government has issued an order to declare Gau Mata as Rajya Mata. It has made the decision citing the cultural importance of Gau Mata in the Indian tradition.

In the official order, the Mahayuti government stated that cows have been an important part of the Indian tradition and hold a spiritual, scientific and military significance since time immemorial.

It also highlighted various breeds of cows found across India while raising concern over the decrease in the number of indigenous cows.

The official order emphasised the use of cow dung in agriculture which can be used as manure. It is pertinent to note that Gau Mata has religious and cultural importance for the Sanatan Dharmis. They are revered in Hinduism and given the status of Mata (mother).

Additionally, rearing cows have socio-economic factors as well. Its milk, urine and dung are considered sacred and are used in abundance. Cow milk is very beneficial for the human body, while cow urine is claimed to cure many diseases.

With this step, the Maharashtra government aims to encourage the cattle rearing of Indigenous cows.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said, “Indigenous cows are a boon for our farmers. So, we have decided to grant this (‘Rajya Mata’) status to them. We have also decided to extend help for the rearing of indigenous cows at Goshalas.”
