Liam Payne died from "multiple traumas" that caused "internal and external bleeding", an autopsy has confirmed. The One Direction star from Wolverhampton died on Wednesday after a fall from the third-floor balcony of a Buenos Aires hotel in Argentina.

His death has left fans stunned worldwide and prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes. Authorities were alerted to an incident involving "an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol" around 5pm.

Emergency teams found the singer in a courtyard following the fall. The autopsy was performed by the Forensic Medical Corps at the Judicial Morgue on Viamonte Street and the preliminary result is consistent with a ten-metre fall he suffered from the balcony of his hotel room, the Express reports.

Before his death, it was reported witnesses stated Liam had been "acting erratic" in the lobby of the hotel and had to be taken back to his room. The Black Country-born star rose to fame after appearing on The X Factor.

Liam ended up being part of a group on the show, One Direction, which went on to achieve worldwide fame. The group sky-rocketed to success and enjoyed a glittering career before they broke up in 2016, with Liam embarking on a solo career.

His family, former bandmates and mother of his son, Cheryl, are among those to have posted emotional tributes in the wake of his death.
