Chris Hoy says 'rock bottom' as wife also diagnosed with incurable disease

The Olympian told how he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer

Sir Chris Hoy's wife was diagnosed with an incurable condition just months after the sportsman was told he has terminal cancer. The Olympic gold medalist has been told he has between two and four years to live.

Medics said he had stage 4 cancer after complaining about pain in his shoulder, which he initially thought was a gym injury. They found tumours in his shoulder, pelvis, hip, spine and rib.

But just months after discovering he had cancer, his family was also devastated by further health news. His wife Lady Sarra was later diagnosed with an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis.

Her GP had ordered a scan to investigate a tingling sensation in her face and tongue, Mirror reports. In an extract of his new book shared with The Times, Sir Chris wrote: "It was. Another scan just before Christmas confirmed that Sarra had "very active and aggressive" MS and needed urgent treatment.

"It’s the closest I’ve come to, like, you know, "why me? Just, what? What’s going on here?" It didn’t seem real. It was such a huge blow, when you’re already reeling.

"You think nothing could possibly get worse. You literally feel like you’re at rock bottom, and you find out, oh no, you’ve got further to fall. It was brutal." Sir Chris said on her worst days Sarra struggles to put a key in the door.

He added: "She says all the time "how lucky are we? We both have incurable illnesses for which there is some treatment. Not every disease has that. It could be a lot worse"."

The parents did not tell their children about Lady Sarra's diagnosis straight away. But with his book going public, they are now preparing for some difficult conversations.
