by · Birmingham Live

Birmingham is at risk of power cuts and travel disruption as poor weather continues to hit the region. The Met Office has increased the weather warning across the whole region to 'amber' level as heavy rains and wind continue to batter the region.

Roads across the West Midlands have been flooded and cars left stranded as poor weather grips the region. A Wetherspoons pub in Aldridge was evacuated on Saturday night after being struck by lightning. Yellow weather warnings have been in place since Saturday September 21 and extended to today and tomorrow (September 22 and 23).

As a result, Birmingham residents are at risk of power cuts and possible cancellations to trains and public transport. Birmingham will have consistent rain throughout Sunday and into Monday with a band of what forecasters say is "organised heavier downpours", bringing a risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

The amber alert covers the whole of the West Midlands and extends into the East Midlands. It was issued by the Met Office today for between 5am and 9pm tomorrow. The forecaster also extended the yellow weather warning over England and Wales today to cover further areas in the north and east.

Widespread rain will continue to plague the region into this evening and will generally remain overcast. Heavy rain is expected to produce some flooding.

Met Office warning

  • Spray and flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Homes and businesses may be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • A possibility that some communities will be cut off by flooded roads
