The Foreign Office has updated its advice for UK tourists travelling to Turkey and has told holidaymakers to 'get appropriate travel insurance' before their trip.

The British government previously advised against travel to three areas of Turkey, however two destinations have now been removed from the list.

Sirnak city and the Hakkari province are no longer included in the FCDO's 'no travel' warning. However, it still advises against all travel to within 10km of the Syrian border, which includes Ceylanpinar, Akçakale and Kilis.

This is due to 'fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism', with officials warning that terrorists are 'very likely' to try to carry out attacks. The Foreign Office has warned that extremist groups based in Syria have the capacity to carry out attacks in Turkey and have previously targeted border crossings and nearby locations on the Syrian side of the border.

Most terrorist attacks have occurred in southeast Turkey, Ankara and Istanbul. The Foreign Office warned that in-person consular support is 'severely limited' in areas where it advises against travel, however 24-hour consular assistance is available by phone and online.

UK tourists who travel against the Foreign Office's advice could invalidate their travel insurance and may not be able to claim. The advice continues: "If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance. Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency."
