Tesco just made a major change to its meal deal — but it’ll cost you £5. From October 21, meal deal fanatics will be able to select the Itsu dragon roll sushi range as part of the £5 Tesco meal deal offer, the supermarket giant has confirmed.

It is an upgrade on the £4 meal deal offer, which costs £3.60 for Clubcard holders. Tesco has teamed up with the popular Asian-inspired high street restaurant Itsu and from October 21 will introduce the high street chain's dragon roll sushi range to its Premium Meal deal menu.

Itsu's grocery Managing Director Claudia Santagada said the chain had been working to deliver a sushi range for supermarkets for "several years" as there were "so many challenges in terms of quality”. The move comes after research by Tesco revealed that sushi had overtaken smoked salmon sandwiches as the UK’s “favourite premium lunchtime treat”.

The strategic decision by Tesco to include sushi in its meal deals comes as a response to changing consumer habits, with sushi overtaking more traditional options like smoked salmon sandwiches as a favoured lunchtime choice. This evolution reflects broader trends in the UK food market towards more health-conscious and culturally diverse eating patterns.

The integration of Itsu’s sushi into Tesco’s meal deal represents a strategic adaptation to contemporary culinary trends, enhancing consumer choice. The sushi selection comprises four distinct varieties, namely Teriyaki Salmon, Vegetable Crunch, Katsu Chicken, and California, priced competitively at £4.75.

In addition to the chilled sushi range, Itsu has broadened its offerings in the frozen food sector, introducing new products such as Chicken Soup and Vegetable Steamed dumplings. These dumplings are convenient, microwavable in slightly over two minutes, and available at a price point of £3 for six pieces.

New vegetable snacks have been added to the frozen section, including Vegetable Tempura Fries, Glazed Miso Aubergine, and Pumpkin Crispy Fritters.
