Claudia Winkleman has said that she isn't able to wear her ideal outfit of choice while co-hosting with Tess Daly, as BBC bosses have informed her 'you can't'.

Speaking with Tess' husband Vernon Kay, the Strictly Come Dancing star claimed that her dream would be to dress like a 'mature French student'.

She said: "I wanted to look like a male mature French student. Let's call him Jean, he's in Lyon, he's on the way to a lecture, he's studying Physics, and, he's got a scarf on, he's got a skinny black pair of trousers, he might have a turtleneck."

And she quipped: "On the way, he's walking, it's damp, it's November. Guess what he goes past? A small pirate fancy dress shop, he picks up something. That's my person."

But, despite her dream to dress like the imaginary student, the 52-year-old revealed her bosses at the BBC are less keen, and have said: "You can't dress as Jean, you have to be somebody else."

However, Vernon mused that there is one week she must 'love' while co-hosting on Strictly. He pointed out that Claudia must take delight in having the extra freedom to dress how she likes when it comes to 'movie week', as the themed show encourages hosts and performers to dress like movie stars.

Claudia agreed and said the special episode gives the stars a chance to get out of their usual 'uniform'. She continued: "The only way to get me out of my uniform, is to dress up as somebody. One year it was Anita Dobson, my most successful year, the next year it was Pat Butcher.

"It's not that you're dressing like them, because these are heroes, so you're not taking the mick, but what you're doing is (thinking) would they think this is alright? Would Anita Dobson say, 'tick'?"

Claudia first featured on the hit BBC show back in 2010 when she began co-hosting the Sunday night results alongside Tess Daly. Four years later, she presented alongside Tess on the main Saturday night show when Sir Bruce Forsyth stepped down.
