Secret doorway spotted in Antarctica sparks conspiracy theories

People are convinced it is something to do with Japanese scientists, penguins or reptiles

Conspiracy theorists believe they have spotted a huge secret doorway in Antarctica. Eagle-eyed sleuths discovered a rectangular shape in the barren snowy wastes after scouring Google Maps.

The quirky find has caused huge speculation on an online conspiracy forum. Theories as to what it could be have included entrances to a Nazi base or even to a hollow Earth kingdom.

Others are sceptical that the shape is anything mysterious. Some online commentators have pointed out it is within the region where a Japanese science base is located.

Others suggest that blue-tinged shapes are not uncommon on Antarctic maps and are likely ice. Comments have included:

"Great find. Could be underground base entrance of some sort. Could be nothing. Excellent find either way."
