Two Brits found dead in Crete hotel rooms as police probe launched

by · Wales Online

Two Brits have been found dead in their hotel rooms in Crete. The bodies of a 71-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man were discovered in separate hotel rooms in Hersonissos, a town popular with British tourists on the Greek island of Crete.

Both British nationals were found on Wednesday, with police currently treating the deaths as unrelated, according to Greek media reports.

The 71-year-old woman was found unresponsive in her hotel room by her son. Emergency services rushed to the scene after he alerted hotel staff, but she was sadly declared dead at the scene. Just hours later, in a different hotel in the same town, a British man was also found dead.

He was transported to hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead on arrival. Both Brits are believed to have had previous health issues, with autopsies currently being conducted to shed "light" on both cases, say Greek police.

This comes a day after a British man died after getting into difficulties while diving off the coast of Majorca with four friends. Local reports describe the man as Scottish and aged 49, reports the Mirror.

He began experiencing trouble in the water at around 11am at Cala d'Or - a resort area on the southeast coast of the holiday island. His four dive companions, believed to be friends, helped him out of the water. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter

They tried to resuscitate the man before medical emergency responders arrived and took over. However, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Civil Guard has launched a routine investigation into the incident. The police force could not be reached for comment. It remains unclear whether the man who died was a holidaymaker or a resident of Majorca.
