Gary Neville's furious clashes with Jamie Carragher as he steps back from MNF

Gary Neville is stepping back from his duties as co-host on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, amid reports he's keen to turn attention to other projects.

The former Manchester United skipper is eager to make more time for projects in the United States, which include his appearances on NBC Sports' coverage of the Premier League and The Overlap US.

Neville told Rebecca Lowe on the Overlap US YouTube channel: "So tomorrow, I'm expected to do set-pieces, whereas with Sky, on Monday Night Football, there are some set-pieces which I prepare for - but now I don't do Monday Night Football anymore, I don't do set-pieces any more."

Neville will still be a part of Sky's coverage going forward, and he is expected to be a part of the channel's Friday Night Football, Saturday Night Football and Super Sunday broadcasts.

However, his decision to step back will see co-host Jamie Carragher handed a more prominent role, with the former Liverpool defender set to be joined by regular special guests.

The move means the pair are likely to spend a little less time together, which means the on-screen clashes between the pair that so many viewers have become accustomed to in recent years are likely to be harder to come by.

One of their most recent spats came when they were covering Liverpool's 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

As Neville picked the bones over the gruesome details of United's defeat, Carragher tried to interrupt.

"Before you start on that would you still swap the two midfields?" he said.

Neville barely looked up before responding: "Will you let me finish?"

He then continued to rant over the perceived shortcomings in United's midfield, before Carragher came back: "Now you've finished, will you answer my question?"

It's just one example of the feisty on-screen exchanges that steadily came to define the pair's relationship, although the pair have also been known to clash on social media.

After Man City manager Pep Guardiola hit back at Neville and Carragher for suggesting his side had become complacent by pointing out neither had won four Premier League titles in a row.

Carragher hit back by pointing out that City are currently under investigation for 115 alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play rules, but Neville decided to go both barrels at the former Liverpool man, jokingly referring to him as a 'dirty little scouse dog'.

He said on TikTok: "We'll start of course with the fact that the old master Pep has had a got at me and Carra for not winning four in a row - sorry Pep, apologies for that - and for my friend James from Liverpool for not participating in Premier League title celebrations at all during his career, which did make me chuckle slightly," he began on TikTok, jokingly poking fun at his friend.

"But the dirty little scouse dog Carragher had to go back at Pep didn't he? He couldn't rise above it and see it as a compliment, and he says to Pep 'If I'd been owned by a nation state or had 115 charges against me and pushed the rules then I'd have probably won a Premier League'.

"Carra, I reckon you'd have won a Premier League title, mate, if you hadn't kept kicking the ball into the back of your own net! That would've been a massive help to your team!"

It seems the butting of heads between the pair isn't confined to the cameras, either. Speaking on a recent episode of The Overlap, Neville explained why the pair seem to have so many arguments.

"He is constantly ‘on’ and I’m sure he'd say the same about me," he said. "But I think sometimes intensity meeting intensity doesn't work. Basically, I need a little bit more Yin and Yang, rather than what we are which is more Yin and Yin."
