Kyran Durnin: What we know about the missing boy's case

Here is what we know about the case of eight-year-old Kyran Durnin whose disappearance earlier this year is being treated by gardaí as murder.

30 August: Kyran is reported missing, along with his mother. Gardaí are told they have not been seen since around 28 August.

4 September: A public appeal in tracing the whereabouts of Kyran and his mother is issued by the gardaí.

16 October: A public appeal is issued for information on the disppearance of the young boy and a murder investigation is confirmed. At this point, gardaí believe that Kyran may have been killed over two years ago.

21 October: Gardaí take possession of a house on Emer Terrace in Dundalk which was Kyran's family home for a number of years.

Minister for Children Roderic O'Gorman asks Tusla, the child and family agency, to send its files on the case to a specialist panel which looks into the death of any child with links to State care.

22 October: A search of the house, as well as the garden and adjoining open ground, begins.

2021/2022: Kyran was a student at a national school in Dundalk until around the end of the 2021/22 academic year.

What else do we know?

Gardaí believe that Kyran may have been killed up to two years ago.

Gardaí have identified the whereabouts of his mother.

A number of State bodies, including Tusla, are assisting the murder investigation.

What is happening in Dundalk today?

Gardaí took possession of the house on Emer Terrace in Dundalk following a District Court Order yesterday.

The property was the missing boy's family home until May of this year.

The house is being searched and will be subject of technical and forensic examinations, as will the garden and adjoining ground to that house.

What do the gardaí have to say on the matter?

Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern said gardaí want to find out what happened to Kyran Durnin.

"An Garda Síochána's sole focus and primary concern, and that of the investigation team is Kyran.

"We want to discover where Kyran is? We want to discover what has happened to Kyran?" said Chief Supt McGovern.
