A British Labour Party peer at the centre of a controversy around donations to senior members of the party, including the Prime Minister, has been placed under investigation by the House of Lords standards watchdog.

Waheed Alli is being investigated due to a complaint around an alleged failure to register interests correctly.

According to an update on the House of Lords website, this could lead to potential breaches of the parliament's rules.

However, it adds that "the fact that an investigation is taking place does not mean that the rules have been broken".

It is not clear what the complaint specifically relates to.

Mr Alli was at the centre of controversy in recent weeks after the Labour government was criticised for giving him a temporary pass to Downing Street.

However, it also emerged that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had received over £30,000 (€36,000) worth of clothes and spectacles from Mr Alli.

Other senior Labour politicians had also benefitted from donations by Mr Alli.

The Labour government has said that further donations of this nature will no longer be accepted and the party has denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Alli was made a Lord by former prime minister Tony Blair in 1998.
