Gary Neville continues to step back from MNF role as Sky Sports role evolves

Gary Neville is stepping away from Monday Night Football as his Sky Sports role continues to evolve.

The Old Trafford legend is looking to dedicate more time to fresh ventures across the pond, with his new series The Overlap US and contributions to NBC Sports' Premier League broadcasts on his agenda. After taking the reins from Andy Gray back in 2011, Neville quickly established himself as MNF's go-to match analyst, before stepping up to present with Ed Chamberlin two years later and eventually forming a formidable, if occasionally fiery, duo with Jamie Carragher from 2015.

Despite their frequent differences, Neville and Carragher have formed a well-regarded punditry team, but Neville's presence on MNF has been waning lately - not gracing the studio since August, allowing Carragher to solo host. On the Overlap US YouTube channel, Neville explained to Rebecca Lowe: "So tomorrow, I'm expected to do set-pieces, whereas with Sky, on Monday Night Football, there are some set pieces which I prepare for - but now I don't do Monday Night Football anymore, I don't do set-pieces any more," reports Mirror Football.

Though Neville began to step away from the Monday night spot last season, enabling Carragher to take more of a leading role, his reduced appearances have become more noticeable this campaign. While we might catch Neville on MNF from time to time, it looks like the show will now pivot to welcoming special guests.

Neville is expected to occasionally feature as a co-commentator, but it's unlikely he'll be in the studio with Carragher and other pundits. Despite this, Neville remains a key figure among Sky's football pundits, continuing his appearances on Friday Night Football, Saturday Night Football and Super Sunday broadcasts - while also contributing to Sky Sports Football's other projects.

It is also understood that Neville and Sky Sports are in agreement of the new arrangement. In a partnership between Sky Sports and NBC, Neville is slated to appear on NBC Sports' Premier League coverage every Sunday of the 2024/25 season.

However, it's understood that most of his contributions will be through live appearances for Sky Sports. The broadcaster is also finalising arrangements for Neville to operate from NBC's live studio in New York for up to four weekends this season, including two appearances before Christmas. English fans won't miss out on his top-tier coverage, as the selected dates don't coincide with any head-to-head weekends featuring high-profile Premier League matches.
