Arsenal reveal Jack Wilshere replacement as former Gunner accepts shock new coaching role

by · football.london

Arsenal have unveiled Adam Birchall as their new under-18s boss following Jack Wilshere's move to Norwich City. The former Gunners midfielder has bid farewell to the youth team setup at London Colney, relinquishing his coaching duties after guiding the side to an impressive FA Youth Cup final run.

Having joined Arsenal's coaching staff post-retirement in 2022 due to injury-induced early retirement, Wilshere has paved the way for Birchall's promotion from assistant coach. Much like Wilshere, he has deep roots in north London and has served across various capacities since joining the academy staff six years ago, recently overseeing the under-17s squad.

After earning his stripes at Barnet, Mansfield Town, Gillingham, and Dover, Birchall now steps up to the head coach role with a wealth of knowledge. An official Arsenal statement reads: "We are delighted to announce that Adam Birchall has become our Under-18s head coach following Jack Wilshere's departure. Wishing you the best of luck in your new role, Adam."

Per Mertesacker has heaped praise on Birchall, considering him an integral addition to the 'key member of the Arsenal family' and emphasises his qualifications for his new role to inspire a fresh batch of Gunners talent. Wilshere is set to join forces with Norwich City manager Johannes Hoff Thorup and his backroom staff.

The Canaries are positioned seventh in the Championship after accumulating 17 points from their initial 11 fixtures. Wilshere steps into the vacancy left by Narcis Pelach, who departed Carrow Road in September for the managerial position at Stoke City.

Through words shared on X, Wilshere heralded Birchalls move: "My Brother @adam_birchall10. The players and staff are lucky to have you lead them! Good luck mate. Until we meet again."

Having been officially introduced by Norwich, Wilshere took the opportunity to voice gratitude towards Arsenal for the coaching break and shared insight on what clinched his decision to switch to the Canaries. Impressed by the vision and strategy conveyed by Sporting director Ben Knapper and [Johannes] Thorup during their meeting, he revelled in the club's ambiance and lauded the training facilities.

The former Arsenal star's statement read: "When I met Ben and Johannes, I was really impressed by their vision and plans for the club. I've heard a lot about the environment around the club, and the facilities at the training centre are first class."

With gratitude for his learning curve at Arsenal, Wilshere expressed fervent anticipation to engage with Norwich's squad and coaching team. He said: "I feel like I've learned so much during my time coaching with Arsenal and I'll be forever thankful for that experience. I'm now really looking forward to working with the coaching staff and players and can't wait to get going."
