Former Chelsea star Mason Mount has already heaped praise on the newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel. The German coach was confirmed as Gareth Southgate's permanent successor on Wednesday.

Mount, 25, left his boyhood club for a new challenge with Manchester United in 2023 but has struggled to recapture his best form at Old Trafford. The midfielder was instrumental during Tuchel's tenure at Chelsea, starring in the team that defeated Manchester City in the 2021 Champions League final.

An injury-plagued spell since joining United has seen Mount left out of the England setup for two years, despite having previously been a regular under Southgate. Tuchel will officially take charge of the Three Lions in January, with interim boss Lee Carsley scheduled to oversee the team during the international break in November.

Mount may have been given his Chelsea breakthrough by ex-mentor Frank Lampard but he continued to thrive under Tuchel. The United midfielder is likely to be buoyed by Tuchel's appointment as he seeks to regain his place in the England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

There will be pressure on Tuchel's shoulders as he looks to deliver success for an England side that has come up agonisingly short at the last two Euros. However, Mount has first-hand experience of how Tuchel operates and the manager's tactical insight made an instant impression on him.

"I remember we had a meeting in the morning," Mount said, recalling his first day working with Tuchel. "The week was a kind of whirlwind, it was crazy. It's something I've never experienced before. We had a meeting where he [Tuchel] put down everything that he wants us to do, how he wants us to play, how he likes to manage. He told us everything, and then we went out and trained, and we had a game the next day.

"So, it was a crazy kind of turnaround but he was so clear on what he wanted and how he would like us to play, very clear on the roles and responsibilities, that it made it very easy for us to transition," Mount explained.

"From day one, as players we realised how he gives his game plan. It made it easy for us to go onto the pitch and do it. As a team we are players who react off that and adapt very quickly.

"It made it easy, and we want to play in these big games and win trophies. That has always been our goal, and since he has come in, he has pushed us, and we have definitely had the opportunity to win big games and play in finals."

Taking over a Chelsea that had made a poor start to the season, Tuchel lifted the Blues from ninth in the table straight to Champions League glory and soon added the Club World Cup to their trophy cabinet. The team also came close to winning the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 but twice lost out to Liverpool on penalties.

Tuchel's time as Chelsea boss came to an end later that year and he was named Bayern Munich boss in March 2023. The 51-year-old won the Bundesliga in his debut season but agreed to leave the German giant in the summer after finishing runner-up to Bayer Leverkusen. That was despite the launch of a fan petition asking him to stay, which reached over 10,000 signatures.

Now stepping into international football with England, Mount's verdict suggests he might just be the perfect fit for the role. The FA held a press conference on Wednesday, where Tuchel expressed his delight to be taking over the Three Lions.

"I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team," Tuchel said. "I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.

"To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting."
