Thomas Tuchel is reportedly set to take charge of the England national team from January 1, following successful negotiations this week.

The Times suggests that the German coach could be announced as the new manager before the end of the week. Manchester United had previously eyed Tuchel as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag after a disappointing start to the season.

United owners Ineos are admirers of Tuchel and he was reported to be among their top candidates to replace Ten Hag if the United boss was shown the door. United have experienced their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign.

Ineos' executives attended a board meeting last week where Ten Hag's future was among the topics discussed. Since then, the club's silence has led fans to believe that he will stay in charge, at least for now.

However, with Tuchel's impending switch to England, United will need to look elsewhere for Ten Hag's potential replacement. It's reported that FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott reached out to former Chelsea boss Tuchel last month.

Pep Guardiola was also reportedly considered by England amid uncertainty over his future at Manchester City. However, it seems Tuchel is poised to succeed interim manager Lee Carsley.

According to Sky Germany, Tuchel has put pen to paper on an 18-month contract set to commence on January 1. Meanwhile, Carsley will continue at the helm for England's concluding two Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland next month.

At Chelsea, Tuchel reached three domestic cup finals, losing out on penalties twice to Liverpool in 2022. He won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.
