A Met Office forecast has shown where snow could fall in the UK from as early as next week.

The UK weather forecaster said there is a chance a dusting of snow could fall on parts of the country. While southerners might hope for a glimpse of some of the white stuff it will be Brits in northern areas who are more likely to see it.

There could be a potential for "snow showers" north of the border with temperatures expected to be below the average. It follows on from predicted upcoming cloudy and foggy conditions across the country, though central and eastern regions only seeing small amounts.

"Following the introduction of some colder air to many areas at the start of this period, with the potential for snow showers in at least northern Scotland, high pressure looks to be the dominant feature during the first part of November," the Met Office's long-range forecast for October 31 and November 9 said. "The main uncertainty is in the position and orientation of the high, which will determine whether the UK remains in a relatively cold air mass or whether somewhat milder conditions return."

Into mid-November, there are signs that the "high pressure may relax its grip on the UK, allowing rather more unsettled conditions to become established." That comes after a spell of sunny weather that many people have experienced this weekend.

In the next week, conditions will change in parts of the UK with clouds rolling over Northern Ireland and western Scotland with outbreaks of rain expected.

From Monday through to Thursday there will be cloudy conditions with some rain and drizzle possible "almost anywhere." Moving on well into November, the Met Office said the more miserable conditions could well continue.

It added: "There is an increasing chance that high pressure will become displaced away from the UK as we head towards mid-November. This may allow areas of low pressure, south-shifted from their more typical tracks, to bring an increased chance of rain or showers at times.

"As a result, after a relatively dry start to the month, a transition to a wetter period is possible as we head towards mid-November. However, there is a chance that high pressure may become more influential once again later in the month.

"Temperatures will probably be close to average for much of this period as a whole, although some colder interludes are possible."
