eBay will be removing all of its selling fees from today meaning it will not cost you any money to sell your unwanted items on the platform.

The secondhand sales site has announced that it has removed all selling fees for private sellers across all categories. This means that private sellers will no longer pay final value fees, regulatory operating fees, or an insertion fee when they sell on eBay. This means sellers will keep more of the cash they make.

The site removed selling fees on all fashion items earlier this year to compete with sites such as Vinted and Depop. The secondhand sales platform says it now wants to "evolve the experience" even further. The do this eBay will be introducing several new features which aim to "simply" the platform. These include:

  • Simplified selling: Sellers can list items across categories within minutes using guidance to help with pricing and shipping options, alongside AI-generated descriptions and photo-enhancing tools
  • Simple delivery: This offers sellers a tracked and fully covered delivery, prepaid by the buyer, for a "simple and secure" shipping experience
  • Local: eBay Local lets shoppers find nearby items available for in-person collection, with local listings having increased visibility with local buyers - all sales will be protected by eBay’s Money Back Guarantee

Simplified selling has already been implemented into the platform while the simplified delivery will be rolled out across different categories over the coming few weeks. Alongside these changes, eBay will also be introducing an "eBay balance" which will begin in mid-October. This new feature gives sellers the flexibility to use their earnings to shop on eBay, promote their listings, purchase delivery labels or withdraw cash if they want to do so.

The only exception to this new rule is motor sales, as fees will still be in place for the sales of cars, motorcycles and vehicle listings. Earlier this year, eBay removed all fees for fashion sales in a bid to compete with other fashion-focused sites such as Vinted and Depop.

Kirsty Keoghan, GM of eBay UK said: "Removing selling fees across categories is designed to give buyers access to greater breadth and depth of inventory, while creating a simplified and streamlined experience for sellers. eBay is constantly improving the marketplace experience in order to deliver on what our customers want."

The platform removed selling fees on its German site last year and saw a rise in both sellers and buyers. eBay says the move will help households as research conducted by the company found that half of British households have unused items in their home worth between £50 and £300. Nearly a quarter are believed to be sitting on items worth over £500.
