Body found in search for missing paddleboarder Simon Daniels after 'capsizing'

A body has been found in the search for the missing paddleboarder Simon Daniels, who disappeared after 'capsizing' in Dovestone Reservoir.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the search for Mr Daniels, a personal trainer, came to a tragic conclusion after the discovery this evening. A huge search operation was launched on Sunday afternoon after a man and woman fell into the water at the beauty spot in Oldham.

It is believed the pair were paddleboarding at the reservoir when they got into difficulty and were using an inflatable paddleboard. Emergency services, including water search teams, Coastguard and Mountain Rescue, rushed to the scene and the woman was rescued and treated for hypothermia and shock.

But the mean, who has been named as Simon Daniels, is said to have got into difficulty in the water. Searches for the personal trainer, from Cheshire, have been ongoing in the days since the incident. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the underwater search team discovered the body, which has been confirmed to be his, at 6.15pm this evening.

His family have been informed of the heartbreaking discovery and the force has said Mr Daniels' death is not being treated as suspicious. In an update, Detective Inspector Laura Crossley from Oldham CID said: "Throughout this tragic incident we have been in close contact with Simon's family and will continue to offer them our support as they come to terms with their loss.

"His death is not being treated as suspicious and the scene has now been closed. A report is being prepared for the coroner. We appreciate the public's support in enabling search teams to carry out their investigations, we understand the inconvenience this may have caused over the last few days, but it was important we conducted a full and thorough search for Simon."

In the days following Mr Daniels' disappearance, loved ones took to social media with messages of support. One wrote: "Winsford is at a very heartbreaking standstill at the moment all hoping and praying for your safe return, but also understanding that may not be the case. But you have a town praying so hard for you right now. With love and support."
