Keir Starmer heckled during major conference speech

Keir Starmer was heckled during his major speech at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool - the Prime Minister batted the disruption away to carry on with his address

by · The Mirror

Keir Starmer's first major conference speech as Prime Minister has been disrupted by a heckler appearing to shout about Gaza.

The PM responded: "This guy has obviously got a pass from the 2019 conference. We changed the party.” He added: "While he's been protesting, we've been changing the party. That's why we got a Labour Government."

In the first speech of a Labour Prime Minister to the party's conference in 15 years, Mr Starmer also told voters there would be difficult choices ahead.

It comes after he braced the public for a "painful" Budget next week and with his government already facing pressure of cuts to winter fuel allowance for OAPs.

But he promised there would be "light at the end of this tunnel" as he sought to strike a more upbeat tone in his mission to rebuild the country.

He said: "I know this country is exhausted by and with politics. I know that the cost-of-living crisis drew a veil over the joy and wonder in our lives and that people want respite and relief, and may even have voted Labour for that reason.

"Our project has not and never will change. I changed the Labour Party to restore it to the service of working people. And that is exactly what we will do for Britain. But I will not do it with easy answers. I will not do it with false hope." He said the end goal is "a Britain built to last, built with respect and built with pride".
