'I've faced Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz – this is what playing them is really like'

Taylor Fritz has spoken out on what it's like to face Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the pair continue to light up the ATP Tour and establish themselves as the faces of tennis

Taylor Fritz has revealed the differences between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner - admitting the tennis stars are both "insane".

The American No.1 has had a tough time recently due to the excellence of the two young players, with Fritz first losing in the US Open final to Sinner earlier this month.

It was only weeks later that he'd suffer another heartbreaking defeat, this time at the hands of Alcaraz, who he lost to in the Laver Cup while representing Team World.

The Spaniard - who donned the colours of Team Europe - defeated his rival 6-2, 7-5, to clinch victory for his team who entered the final day of the tournament trailing 4-8 but managed to recover to earn their fifth triumph of the Laver Cup.

The 26-year-old spoke to media after his defeat to the four-time Grand Slam champion where he was asked to compare the differences between Alcaraz and Sinner which Fritz did with detail.

"It’s a little tough to compare the two, just because the conditions are so incredibly different, it’s so much slower here versus the US Open, so it’s very tough," he said.

While pointing out that the Italian possesses a superior serve over Alcaraz, he said the Murcia native's overwhelming style of play causes the opponent struggles to settle into a game, a feeling he admitted he experienced during their clash.

"I did feel Jannik maybe can serve a bit better, but from the ground I felt like I had pretty much no time to play today, trying to get into rallies, feel things out. I just didn’t really ever get to settle in. I was always being rushed and moved, and I definitely felt like I had less breathing room against Carlos. But I mean, both are insane players."

Fritz didn't waste time in getting back to action after the Laver Cup as he competed in the Japan Open but was defeated in the Round of 32 by Arthur Fils as he lost 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 earlier this week. The San Diego native opened up about the physical toll he's endured as of late, explaining issues he's faced with his shoulder when hitting balls.

"I just have something with the balls. I’ve been having some tightness in my left shoulder, noticed it after the first day," he said. "It's more from hitting backhands and it gets tight, and I struggle to toss the ball a bit, but it kind of lit up on me a bit in the second set of the match yesterday."
