Reddit users were frustrated this morning because the social media site was down.

Thousands of users reported issues with Reddit, which displayed an error message on its website. It showed a blank page and read “no healthy upstream”. The problems began at around 5am, according to website disruption tracker Down Detector.

It is understood the site and its app are struggling to connect to its backend servers. The official Reddit status page stated that the site is currently running as normal despite being down for thousands of users. Reddit also hasn’t acknowledged the issue on its official account on X, formerly known as Twitter. There are reports of issues for users across both the UK and US. The Mirror has contacted Reddit for comment.

Social media users have shared their ire on X. One user said: "What happened to Reddit? It's been down for hours." Another stated: "Reddit is down. Shows you the extent of my life if I notice it's down at 4am." A third regular user said: "Reddit is down. how am i supposed to waste time at the office?"

But in the meantime, savvy users have found a workaround to get Reddit working again. All you need to do is visit “old Reddit,” the original, no-frills version of the site. You can access it by typing old.reddit.com into the URL bar on a browser and, if you like it, you can set your Reddit preferences to revert to the original design.

Reddit also went down in August. On that occasion, more than 150,000 users in the US suffered issues with the platform. The majority of these people found the app unresponsive but the website was also down. There were around 30,000 reported issues in the UK at its peak.

That time, Reddit received criticism on other social media sites, including X. One X user posted: "I'm running to Twitter to see if Reddit is down for everyone else."

Reddit tweeted: "The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented." It previously said there was a "degraded performance," to which X users reacted with fury. One posted: "How come you can say 'degraded performance' while it's literally been dead for over 20 minutes?"
