Strictly star Wynne Evans' astonishing GoCompare earnings that 'bought his house'

Opera singer turned Strictly star Wynne Evans rarely speaks about the staggering wealth he made from the iconic Go Compare adverts, but says it was enough to buy his house outright

Wynne Evans won't be bringing out his iconic moustache as he competes for the Glitterball Trophy.

The Welsh opera singer, who shot to fame for his role in the iconic Go Compare adverts, made Strictly Come Dancing judges smile last week after dancing the samba to Help Yourself by Tom Jones with pro dancing partner Katya Jones. The couple scored a respectable 26 points, ranking 5th on the scoreboard.

With Wynne, 52, back on our screens for the first time in years - rumours about the star's lucrative earnings have recirculated.

In an interview with Radio Times, the singer was asked whether the original curly moustache he wore in the Go Compare ads would ever feature during his Strictly stint. "I've got the original at home in a frame, as it paid for my house," he revealed.

When Katya teased him by ordering him to stay 'humble', Wynne joked: "Katya will soon be praying at the shrine of the Go Compare moustache. Can I ask you a question, Katya? You know how you've done Strictly since 2016? Do you ever get a bit like: [sighs]?" to which the dancer replied: "No – and the moment I do, I won't be here."

In the past, Wynne has shot down rumours he made £450,000 for a two-year deal for the ads on the condition he didn't lose any weight. He said his pay was 'generous' but that the speculation was 'not true'. Later, in 2022, he said: "Like Gary Lineker, I work for the BBC and appear in a long-running advertising campaign. But sadly, he earns somewhat more than me."

When asked if he was on 'silly money' by reporters in 2016, the celeb responded: "Silly money? That would suggest that I've been paid too much, and that's never happened! But yeah, you do have to pinch yourself sometimes, and think: 'Gosh, I'm very lucky'. For example, I once did an opera recording where I only had about six notes to sing. I was paid the equivalent of £300 a note. That was fantastic."

Reports suggest Wynne's net worth now lies around the £100 million mark, but he remains cagey about his finances. He did admit his Mercedes car cost him an eye-watering £45,000 which he sold and traded in for a different model priced at £30,000. "I paid for it in cash, because I'm getting to a stage in life where I don’t want debt hanging over me," he added.

Strictly Come Dancing airs every Saturday night on BBC One.
