Bruno Fernandes has wished heartfelt thanks to Erik ten Hag after his Manchester United sacking.

The Dutchman was fired on Monday following the weekend's defeat to West Ham. A club statement confirmed the decision.

It read: "Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."

And Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes has become the first United star to react to Ten Hag's exit. The Portuguese playmaker released an emotional statement on Instagram on Monday afternoon.

Fernandes wrote: "Thanks for everything boss! I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best in the future.

"Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great from all of us I hope you fans can keep with you the good things the manager has done for our club!"

Fernandes, 30, made more appearances under Ten Hag than any other manager in his career. The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder made 120 outings under the Dutchman, scoring 29 goals and providing a further 32 assists.

Fernandes also lifted two trophies for United during Ten Hag's spell at the helm - United winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.
