Comedian Janey Godley has died at the age of 63.

The sad news was confirmed by her manager, before Janey's daughter Ashley Storrie released a heartfelt video message to social media. Ashely thanked staff at the hospice where her comedian mother had been staying for making a 'scary transition so peaceful.'

Ashley had been her mum's voice in the weeks and months before her death, regularly posting to social media and sharing her brave mum's journey.

Just days before Janey passed, Ashley described her as being 'in the final beats of life.' In the same post, she also revealed her pride as her mum was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow as she shared a pic of her receving a certificate from her bed.

The post read: “Thank you @UofGlasgow for bestowing upon my mum the honorary degree of doctor of the University of Glasgow. This has brought her so much joy in the final beats of her life. Janey is so honoured and I am so immensely proud of her. I am always proud of her. Thank you for all your kindness and support to our family in this very difficult time."

The University of Glasgow replied: "It is an honour to bestow an honorary doctorate on the incredible Dr Godley. We send all our love and support to Janey and her family." Ashley also posted pictures of Janey lying in bed and smiling while showing off the certificate from the university.

Friends and fans rushed to the comment section to send their support. Nigella Lawson wrote: "This is heartbreakingly beautiful. All love to you," while Owen Jones said: "She’s an incredible woman who has made us laugh and think, full of so much courage and moral clarity. She is so loved."

India Willoughby posted: "Sending love to you both. Richly deserved Janey!" Janey is currently receiving end-of-life care after her terminal cancer spread.

Janey, best known for her Nicola Sturgeon parodies, announced the heartbreaking news of her ovarian cancer in November 2021.

She was given the all-clear in 2022, before later announcing that another scan had shown signs of the disease in her abdomen. She then cancelled her forthcoming tour this autumn due to her stage four ovarian cancer. The stand-up announced she would be getting palliative care and going into a hospice in a video shared to social media.

“So I’m now in palliative care and I’m at end-of-life care now in the hospital”, she said in the video. "The chemo ran out of options and I just couldn’t take any more of it and the cancer has spread. So it looks like this will be getting to near the end of it and it’s really difficult to speak about this and say to people.” She also thanked charities who have supported her throughout her health journey.
