Manchester United fans have been sent into hysteria after Ruben Amorim’s thumping win against Manchester City.

The Portuguese tactician oversaw his final home game with Sporting Lisbon ahead of a move to Old Trafford. And it actually got off to a rotten start as Phil Foden opened the scoring for City.

But a Viktor Gyokeres hat-trick and a strike from Maximiliano Araújo secured a memorable 4-1 victory for Amorim and Sporting. And United fans have taken to social media to hail their incoming boss for his victory over their fierce rivals.

One fan wrote: “He's on his way. Pure class from @SportingCP, they dealt with this very amicably. Congratulations on the victory tonight. I'm happy they could part with Amorim on such a high note, with beating City in some style!”

Another Red Devils’ supporter said: “Sporting CP 4-1 Manchester City, unbelievable result and energy from Ruben Amorim’s Team with some very impressive performances from a number of his players, looks like United have a good one, look how he’s got that sporting team playing.”

The praise continued to come for Amorim throughout the evening, with some suggesting that the Portuguese tactician was the best manager in the world, while another predicted that he would end the Red Devils’ long wait for a Premier League crown.

“Muito Obrigado. Sir Rúben Amorim will finally have #MUFC winning the league again,” one particularly optimistic fan predicted, while another said: “Ruben Amorim fair play mate. He [Pep Guardiola] didn’t know what to do. We now have the best gaffer.”

“Amorim cooking against City…” another supporter said. “Ruben Amorim completely destroys Pep and city ... As a @ManUtd fan I love to see Amorim ball. This is why I love football.”

United fans don’t have much longer to wait to see Amorim take the reins at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old takes charge of his final match with Sporting Lisbon this Sunday - poignantly an away game against his former side Braga.

He will then take a break for the November internationals before officially completing his move to the Premier League. Amorim’s first game in charge of United will come against newly-promoted Ipswich at Portman Road.

The Red Devils also face a further two games ahead of his arrival. They take on PAOK in midweek ahead of Sunday’s clash with Leicester at Old Trafford - interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy set to remain in charge.
