Manchester City were at the centre of VAR controversy as John Stones headed home a 95th minute winner at Wolves.

England international Stones powered home Phil Foden ’s delivery to send the away fans into raptures at the prospect of a 2-1 win - only for the Video Assistant Referees to get involved.

The announcement in the stadium declared that the check was for an ‘Offside’, much to the surprise of those at Molineux. But the VAR had questions over Bernardo Silva’s role in the goal and the announcement of the check - and the decision to send Chris Kavanagh to his monitor - led to jubilant scenes among the home supporters and on the Wolves bench.

Kavanagh took a look at the monitor and saw that as Foden delivered, Bernardo Silva was tussling with Wolves ‘keeper Jose Sa. And the question was whether Bernardo was interfering with the Wolves stopper as Stones nodded into the roof of the net.

City players and coach Pep Guardiola were furious that Kavanagh had been called to the monitor - seemingly in the belief that he was set to disallow the goal. Wolves boss Gary O’Neil could be seen shouting at Guardiola and his coaching staff “he’s offside, he’s offside.”

However, the video footage showed that as Stones made contact, while Silva was in an offside position, he was no longer tussling with his Portugal international team-mate Sa, nor was he blocking his view of the ball.

Indeed, according to the PGMOL, the assistant referee had in fact flagged for offside - in amongst the City celebrations. Thus, as that point, the goal had been overruled.
