Arne Slot tells Liverpool to copy Man City factor if they want to win title: 'You need to'

Liverpool face Arsenal in a crunch clash at the Emirates on Sunday and Arne Slot is mindful they only won once away against the Premier League's top sides last season

Arne Slot claims Liverpool must copy Manchester City and win more big away games if they want to be champions.

Slot cited Kevin De Bruyne scoring City’s huge winner at Chelsea in September 2017 as the Blues won their first title under Pep Guardiola after failing in his first season. Slot faces the toughest game of his Anfield reign at Arsenal on Sunday and Liverpool won just one of their away games last season against the Gunners, City, Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle, Manchester United and Aston Villa.

The Reds head coach, who has set records by winning 11 of his first 12 games at Liverpool, has told his players they must do better on the road if they want to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League. “It’s such a long time ago, but I can remember the first year when Pep was at City that they hardly won any away games,” he said.

“In the second year, I remember it was the first one, Chelsea away, Kevin De Bruyne scored a solo goal, and they won for the first time a big away game. So if you want to win this league, no matter who it is, you need to win a few of the five, six, seven very difficult away games.

“We’re talking about Newcastle, we’re talking about Chelsea, about Aston Villa, about Tottenham, about City, about United and about Arsenal.”

Liverpool managed just three points in their four games against Arsenal and City last season and they were key as they finished third in the title race.

“If you look at Arsenal last season, I think it was seven points in between Arsenal and Liverpool,“ said the Dutchman. “The home game was a one-one, the away game Arsenal won.

"So if we could change the away result, which we can’t, to a win for Liverpool that would have made one point difference between the two teams. So that’s why if you play your competitor, those games are vital, just like all the others, but maybe these ones even a bit more.”
