Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui is facing a prolonged spell out of action after undergoing surgery for heart palpitations.

United sources confirmed the right-back, who joined from Bayern Munich in the summer in a deal worth up to £17million, underwent a minor precautionary corrective procedure after experiencing palpitations.

It is understood it is a relatively common condition, with Mazraoui expected to make a full recovery, although United have not put a timescale on the expected return of the 26-year-old.

Mazraoui, who has started all seven of United's Premier League games this season at right-back, came off at half-time in Sunday's goalless draw at Aston Villa.

He subsequently withdrew from Morocco's squad for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month and is facing several weeks on the sidelines following the procedure.

Mazraoui is expected to make a full recovery and sources have stressed that his condition is not an emergency, although it is not the first time Mazraoui has suffered from heart issues.

He was sidelined for Bayern in early 2023, missing January, February and only returning in March, after suffering heart palpitations due to Covid during a post-World Cup vacation.

Mazraoui tested positive for Covid during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which forced him to miss Morocco's 1-0 quarter-final victory over Portugal.

In a statement released at the time, Bayern said: "During a follow-up examination, Mazraoui was diagnosed with a mild inflammation of the pericardium.”

United were aware of Mazraoui's previous heart issues when they signed him, although sources have indicated his current condition is different to those he has experienced in the past.

Mazraoui has been United’s first-choice right-back this season, with Diogo Dalot switching to left-back in the continued double absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The enforced loss of Mazraoui is another blow to under pressure United boss Erik ten Hag in terms of personnel available.

Centre-back Lisandro Martinez could move across to left-back and Dalot back to right-back, with Shaw and Malacia still unavailable.
