Friends of Liam Payne have claimed they were planning an intervention for the star on the day of his death.

The singer tragically died on Wednesday aged 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He suffered "very serious injuries incompatible with life". In an official statement given to The Associated Press, Argentinian police disclosed that the father-of-one had "jumped from the balcony of his room", apparently dispelling any notions of an accidental fall or foul play.

It's believed Liam had been under the influence of drink or drugs, local media reports. In a desperate call made to emergency services, hotel staff requested 'urgent' support just before his death. A close friend of Liam has since claimed they reached out to the singer to suggest he got help on Wednesday.

"His friends have been worried about him for weeks because he was struggling with his career and wanted to release some new music but he felt he wasn't as good as his other bandmates, which they kept telling him just wasn't true," a source told the Sun. They added that Liam was "always so hard on himself".

The source claimed: "Then in recent weeks his drinking and suspected drug use started to worry his friends, they were actually planning an intervention, it was that bad." They added that on the day of his death, Liam was "acting very off and erratically". "One of his friends suggested to him again that he should get help but this just seemed to set him off more," the source said.

Hotel Casa Sur's head of reception had made two 911 calls, asking for "someone to come" after disclosing that a guest was "off his head on drugs and is destroying everything in his room". According to LA NACIÓN, Liam went down to the hotel lobby, "visibly out of his mind." The staff who interacted with him asked him to return to his hotel room, but minutes later, the impact of his body was heard when he fell from the third floor.

A hotel guest, named Rebecca (not her real name), claimed to MailOnline that Liam told her "I'm so f***ed up" during a 30-minute conversation with him. Rebecca said Liam's "bizarre" final moments have left her shaken as she claimed he "wanted to get recognised" while in the lobby.

He left but later returned to the lobby with a laptop in hand and began reading emails in public view. Rebecca recalled seeing the singer opening an email that "obviously upset him". "Suddenly he took the computer, shouted 'f**k this s**t mate!' and started bashing the computer on the ground," she added.

According to Rebecca, staff and guests inside the high-end hotel were really shocked so she went over to check if the distressed star was ok. "But he just kind of grunted," Rebecca said Liam's response to her concern was. "Then he said 'I used to be in a boyband. That's why I'm so f**ked up'." It has been claimed Liam was axed by the record label in the days preceding his death.
