Film critics have issued mixed opinions over Lady Gaga's latest acting project with Joaquin Phoenix.

The Poker Face hitmaker, 38, was cast as Harley Quinn, Arthur Fleck's other half, in Joker: Folie À Deux, a sequel to Todd Phillips' 2019 film, which earned Joaquin an Oscar. Lady Gaga took on the new role after showing off her acting skills in A Star Is Born and American Horror Story.

But while her fans were excited to see on the silver screen once again, Lady Gaga's new film has failed to make everyone happy as many critics have branded the movie "bleak." Others have pointed out that the director, Todd Phillips, has failed to use the actress correctly in his film.

As the BBC reports, David Ehrlich wrote for IndieWire that "Phillips’ musical sequel feels like it’s bad on purpose", before adding that the film was "boring, flat, and such a criminal waste of Lady Gaga that we should demand a public hearing" in a scathing review.

Geoffrey Macnab, on the other hand, wrote in The Independent: "Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor."

Danny Leigh from The Financial Times followed this up by taking aim at Todd Phillips: "while Gaga works hard enough to bump up the star rating alone, the thinness of her role makes Phillips seem like the dog that caught the car. He wanted her in the movie, without a clue what to do next."

The Joker sequel has also seen its Rotten Tomatoes score taking a nosedive as it has sunk to 39% from 159 critic reviews. Finally, The Daily Mirror gave Joker: Folie À Deux a three-star rating but added: "The original was a work of art. This, however, falls short."

But while her career may have been dealt a massive blow, Lady Gaga's relationship with fiancé Michael Polansky has been growing from strength to strength as she looks to the future.

Lady Gaga got engaged to entrepreneu Michael in April after five years of romance. The pair first met at a party in December, 2019, before going public with their relationship in early 2020. The loved-up couple are now planning their life together with the singer admitting having a family is her "number one" priority. When asked about her plans for the next 15 years, she told BuzzFeed Canada : "I'm so happy to be in love and I'm so excited to have a family. So, that's definitely number one."
