Miranda Hart hit 'rock bottom' as chronic illness left her 'bed-bound' before diagnosis 'relief'

by · Manchester Evening News

Miranda Hart has told how she hit 'rock bottom' during her battle with ill health and how an eventual chronic illness diagnosis brought 'relief'.

The comedian and actress, who appeared in her own semi-autobiographical sitcom Miranda, first went public with her ill health in August as she confirmed that she was releasing a new book, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You, in which she'll talk about her time away from the spotlight.

But she's also previously shared how she hopes that by telling the story of her health struggles in her memoir, which is out on Thursday (October 10), will help others going through tough times.

In a new interview with Radio 4's Today programme, the 51-year-old said of her health: "Unless you’ve had fatigue [like that], you don’t understand what literally not getting off the floor is. I was basically bed-bound - and housebound. There’d be times where I’d look at a glass of water, and think ‘I don’t know how to pick that up."

She added: "All anyone wants is to be heard, accepted, loved and seen… and when you’re not - particularly in a medical situation - it’s the worst. I thought I need to research this whole wellness expertise and dialogue that’s out there, but I was at bed at home alone, the doctors didn’t know what to do with me and I couldn’t have a cold plunge or go on a yoga retreat."

Miranda explained how it was her own research which led to her discovering "10 keys, which I call my treasures, to living well", saying they have helped her with Lyme disease, which has left her struggling with chronic fatigue.

According to the NHS, Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. Some people also get flu-like symptoms a few days or weeks after they were bitten by an infected tick, such as a high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery, headache, muscle and joint pain and tiredness and loss of energy."

When she finally received her diagnosis, she was able to trace the condition back to her teenage years. "Probably when I was about 14 or 15, I got a tick-borne illness... and that's when my symptoms started," the TV star recalled. It was such a relief. I mean, being misunderstood and misjudged is one of the hardest things about these kind of conditions. For sure."

Miranda, who says in her new book the diagnosis left her at "rock bottom", said that despite the setbacks the disease has caused her the diagnosis was a "relief". She added: "I mean, being misunderstood and misjudged is one of the hardest things about these kind of conditions."
